Physical aging appearance

I have found nothing has aged me more since BC than my hair.0

A good cut & color does wonders! or a good wig if that's where you're at. I got one I could swim in, sleep in (on a satin pillow as befitted its price) and looked better than my 'real' hair ever could have, I had comments like, "Well, at least you didn't lose your hair."

LOL Ruth...it's amazing how far things have come for us BC survivors!

No, it's just too short and curly. I can't sexy it up and I don't really want a wig, I waited so long for my hair, but we'll see....

go to a beautican whose an expert on curly hair....

I found the best thing to do when it was that curly was just to go with it. If I tried to fight it and straighten it out, it looked like I stuck my finger in a light socket. Put a little product in it, let it dry curly (this way it is not frizzy) and then stick a cute clip or two in it. You CAN make it cute! Oh... and maybe jazz it up with a color change. BUT my advice on that is not to do it your self... I decided to go red when my hair was first growing in. LOL... I looked like Brandon Frasier on that movie with Elizabeth Hurley when he was the red headed freckled kid on the beach. LOL! This was NOT a good look for me. lololol

I have just found this thread and read the whole 15 pages! Dried, wrinkled skin and thinning hair have been a dramatic change for me since I started on Als. I've used organic EVVO infused with a tiny bit of essential oils on skin and hair. I'll add in the coconut oil....already use coconut milk as well as almond and rice milk.
One thing I've learned: check bought "natural" products carefully...even the ones that completely eliminate parabens and other chemicals often use some version of soy oil mixed in with coconut/olive/grapeseed oil, etc. Soy oil is a cheap additive. Products that say 100% vegetable/vegan products and oils often have soy in some form. I try to avoid descriptions that indicate oils have been mixed unless they specifically name the oils. The same thing happens with food products, too. For example, there's a mayo product that advertises "made with olive oil" but when you check the contents, it contains more soybean oil than olive oil. I bought it before I read and had to throw it out. Also, you may want to check your cocoa and chocolate products...some have soy lecithin.
I'm so glad to find this thread...so many good ideas already. Thanks for starting it.
Edited to add: one of the popular almond milk products contains soy...don't remember which but I always check when buying.

Nordy, I'm pretty good with color, but I just can't style it. It's too short and choppy and curly.
October, I agree 100%. EVERYTHING has soybean oil! I won't buy something now unless I know ALL the ingredients (i.e. pure jojoba oil, coconut oil, etc).

I just bought Silk PureAlmond milk (Dark Chocolate flavor). I was shocked that there wasn't soy in it. Isnt the brand Silk an infusion of the words Soy and Milk?
Btw it was delicious.0 -
soy lecithin isn't the same as soy & according to what I've read is O.K. (I need my dark chocoate for 'medicinal purposes'! )0

In reference to the coco oil for hair, throw damp towel into micro, wrap hair up after applying the oil, working it into the dry ends (if you have them) more and less at scalp. Have a cup of java or tea and enjoy a good book or so, letting it sit for about 20-30 minutes, rinse out or leave in. Washing every other day helps your hair as well, it is essential for natural oils to build up in your hair, as well as your skin. I add a few squirts of baby oil as well to my bath water and NOT HOT WATER (very drying) especially this time of year for us winter weathered gals...as a major sun worshipper in my 20's, 30's and now also in my 40's, protection is the key and high spf and getting enough sleep as well, stress is a major factor and the more we can do for ourselves to "ease" and "deplete" the stress, the better....it all comes out in our faces and hair and bodies at one point or another....yoga and tai chi excellent as well! ((((hugs)))

I've been using the Spectrum brand of coconut oil on my face for about a week now. My face positively glows! Someone at work even commented on it. I was a bit worried because I have oily skin, but this seems to be creating a balance. My only "problem" is getting the darn stuff out of the jar and onto my fingers! It's rock hard, but emulsifies quickly.
The face cream I was using before and still love is by a local company called NovAurora. There's a website but I get it in our Vitamin Cottage. She makes her products with organic aloe vera. It's all organic, no bad stuff in it. I had a facial done at a hig-end spa in Santa Fe last spring, and the lady said not to change what I was doing. She didn't even try to push the spa's line of products on my. So, if I tire of the coconut oil, I'll go back to my NovAurora!!
I quit dying my hair a few years ago. It grew out so fast that I was having to color it every 4 weeks. Too much stuff, and my hair suffered. So, I keep it short and natural. But sometimes I see pictures of me with a good color and I miss it. Just not the hassle or the cost...

Octobergrace - I use a vegannaise by Follow Your Heart. It uses grapeseed oil. It does have some soy protein in it so I am not sure it is really that great for me but I figure it has to be better than my beloved Hellman's.

I read years ago not to lie on your side at night. All your mucles and wrinkles slide down to that side. You should lie on your back for evenness. Also, not to put your hand on the side of your jaw while surfing the internet. It pulls the facial skin up.

and don't smile because it causes crow feet. I'm not making that up but I'm still going to smile. Parents paid way too much to straighten my teeth. My smile is one of my husband's favorite features on me… first thing he noticed when he met me.

Shit - I always sleep on my right side - my new problem is acne! How cruel is God that I have wrinkles and zits! When I went thru chemo I never had a single zit- I had a ganglion cyst on my hand and it got rid of. Pimples on my chin, forehead - I look like a teenage except when I was a teenager my skin was clear. And I can't leave them alone - I have tried over the counter stuff - too poor to order anything exotic............, sigh

And Lago - you do have a beautiful smile!

Thanks Ellie. Nope chemo couldn't take that away

Lago- I agree with Ellie. You have a beautiful smile, and a good spirit, I can tell. Keep it up!

Ellie I just went to the dermatalogist because I have been having these bumps on my face. Not acne but bumps. He called them oil gland something or nother and froze and burned them. He would only do a few because they have to scab over so I will go every 2 months until he takes care of all of them for me.

LOL....Barbe, as I was reading your post, I had my jaw resting on my hand. I'm sure I do that ALL the time. I will now rethink that pose!!

HAhahahahaha, as I came back on the thread I was resting my hand too!! Such a bad, bad habit. You can feel how it must stretch your skin. My jaw is starting to change it's mind on where it wants to be....

LOl me too as I read this. It will make us all pay attention to resting our jaw in our hand!!!

A little hair color, eyelash extensions and a trip to Mexico makes for a good recipe for feeling and looking better. I hope the extensions last a while. They make me feel more feminine, esp. since I've been going topless for a long while. I've gotten a lot of compliments and I really think it's the lashes. So fun! ~ Daiva

man i feel 150 years old right now and look it...really cranky which really impacts my face...not sure why...lolled around all day on a snow day that didn't have any snow...I think the day's laziness, a budding cold and a pumpkin pie i baked and ate half of may have something to do with it...the bags under my eyes are to my chin...whiny...i think i will go take a bath...after reading all of this all I want is a big bowl of coconut ice cream drenched in hot fudge..followed by a pumpkin pie chaser...even my eyeballs are sore. thanks for letting me whine.
