Did I miss something about baklava? I was stationed in Turkey for 15 months when I was in the Air Force and I used to get great baklava all the time. I had a favorite bakery I would get it from. I love it - it is at the top of my dessert list.

OK, I love my bro-in-law, but he is a talker, and boring but thinks he is interesting. So not tossing him in exactly, but would like to just toast him a little til he shuts up! He and my sis are spending the next few days with us, attending a convention but didn't want to spend the $$ to stay at the hotel, so they aren't actually HERE all that much, but just enough so I want to scream a couple of times. And then feel guilty cuz he is actually a pretty nice guy. But talkative and boring, and doesn't tell jokes - just talks business and kids. Maybe a little whiskey would help....

Whiskey...vodka...wine! Oh yeah! And toasted marshmallows too! And Linda... I think every family has someone who thinks they have terrific stories to tell....I love my brother dearly... But when he starts a story...OH BROTHER! He's too loveable to throw in the fire... So I'll just have a drink instead!
Saw my new favorite person yesterday... The ENT because VR just couldn't take it anymore! He fried the turbinates... Those nostril membranes that swell... And voila! VR can smell and taste and think straight! A miracle! Next week, round two. He'll rotor rooter the clogged maxillary sinus and then the rest of VR's pain will roast in the fire!
Cheers! )))0 -
VR, sounds not fun, but boy, the results are great! I lost my sense of smell (and consequently taste) once many years ago, and I was absolutely miserable as I realized that smell is much more important to me than I had ever imagined! I was lucky that it came back, and I truly appreciate it more than ever, and can totally empathize with anyone dealing with the sinus clog/pain/no smell/no taste agony. Glad you are doing better, hope you get back to 100% really soon!
Grannydukes, I just can't believe you have NOTHING to throw in.... we kind of count on you to keep that fire going some days! LOL! Guess we need to pitch in a little more and do our fair share! So glad you and Veggy had a good visit. I would love to meet some of you wonderful women in person some day for a REAL bonfire!0 -
ya want a fire ill give you stuff to start...my friends brother in law was just diag w/pancreatic cancer...into the fire that disease goes. Not too many survivors with that.
Now you can also throw all the people who expect me to feel sorry for my X who is supposed to be in bad shape.Grannydukes doesnt give a shit.
So now you can start that damn fire..slow and steady...VR--are you ready?
Linda---can you bring the sticks and stones so we can get started?
nice and easy now...my X is old and fragile..maybe we can smother him before he hits the fire.
gosh im gonna go to hell for doin this but I want you to know he left me with 4 kids and no roof over my head.dont ya think he deserves it???
on second thought maybe we should just throw some stones!!!God doesnt like ugly and im feelin guilty for feelin this way....help me out here!!!!!!

Granny - You have every right to feel that way. Your X did not do the responsible thing and at least left you and your 4 children a place to live. Hell, I want to slap the shit out of him. So go ahead and just throw his sorry ass in the fire.

Hey Gran..............I'll help you lift him up............................

Grannydukes, I am getting several armsful of kindling ready!!!
I just read a funny story about one of the saints (can't remember his name right now) who was being burned at the stake, quipped to the guys who was supervising the roasting, said "I'm done on this side, why don't you turn me over and have a bite!".... or something like that. It is one of the stories in the book I am reading by James Marten SJ "Between Heaven and Mirth" which is full of inspiration and funny stories.
And no guilt for feeling the way we feel! It's OK to be angry, furious, depressed, as well as happy, joyful, etc. We have our feelings, our emotions, and they cannot be denied. What we do with them is another story.... tossing crap and people onto the fire can be quite constructive or destructive, depending.... and in the case of Xs who have created distress for their X and children, who have not kept their vows.... probably tossing them in does the world a huge favor, IMHO!0 -
Granny, roast him . please tell me it's not the kids that think you ought to feel sorry for him???????
Jo Yes Baklava---made well---heaven---not made well such a disappointment.
VR--so right about the writng. I went to read one of my first major post. Sheesh, I'll be forever editing it. Thanks. Will relook at other earlier works.

Love Baklava, and yes Sassy, such a disappointment. And there is no excuse for not making it well because it is so easy to do. About the only way to ruin it is by substituting cheap ingredients or making inappropriate changes to the recipe. I've taken mine to many pot lucks and it usually disappears before any of the other desserts are touched.

Chabba---would you believe at a Italian/Greek restaurant when I asked for honey to pour on my very dry Baklava, they gave me corn syrup--like I wouldn't notice. Chabba--how's about saginaki(sic?). Same thing, if it's good--heavan. Most restaurants are prohibited now from lighting it table side. By the time it gets to the table, enough cooling has occured that it changes the whole experience:(........Safety I understand, but I miss the old saginaki.

Ok I dont feel guilty anymore.Thanks.Its only 1 of my daughters who actually feel sorry for him.She is the only one who cares if he lives or dies.
Funny thing my youngest daughter said when i told her he is sick SHE SAID ILL MAKE UP WITH HIM IF HE BUYS ME A PINK COACH BAG.LOL.
My 1 son talks to him only once in a while and my other son could give 2 shits about him.He remembers how hard it was for us when he left us with no place to live...
sooooooooo turn him over now cause he is well done on one side now.
ahhhhhhh you sistas make me feel sooo good.

Sassy, I'm not familiar with that second dish you mentioned. My experience with Greek food is pretty limited. I first experienced Baklava at a highly rated Greek place in Seattle back in the 60's. When we lived there for a couple of years after we were first married my FIL often had to work in his Department's Seattle office for a week or so at a time. He often took us to dinner there. The Baklava there is the best I've ever tasted, though FIL and the rest of the family claim mine is almost as good.
I'm a good cook and I love doing ethnic meals. I have even served meals from their own heritage to a couple of foreign born friends. My Italian friend proclaimed my ravioli "better than Grandma's" and my Chinese friend said my pressed duck was just like Mother's and my barbecued pork the best he had eaten on this side of the Pacific. He asked me to give his wife the recipe.

Chabba HMM can I come to dinner? Saginaki (sic?) is a greek cheese that should be served at table side (the best), first I think put under a broiler, then taken to table, has alcolol poured over it--not sure what type, then boils off very quickly--Ompah is said when it's lite. It's then served on baguet toast or non toasted bread. Have had it both ways . So, don't know what the real tradition is. But done well , it is wonderful. But b/c of the flame that is why it's been banned at tableside in restaurants. It was first describe to me by my sister as a seven layer cheese. But I saw it at a greek rtnt being cut off a big block --guess USA style. Can only imagine the true Greek recipe and presentaion HMMMM
Re: baklava--they are lucky to have you----to even say that it as near as good --oh my..........it takes patience to make as well as a good recipe.

I think I've seen that on the food channel but never had a chance to try it. Authentic Greek restaurants are rare in Washington and I've only been to two. The other was in Spokane where I worked one week a month for 18 months - while working my regular job in Olympia - that my co-workers had lunch one day every time I went over there. It was a little family place that only seated about a dozen people and there was no regular menu, just a chalk board with the day's specials. The only thing the had every day was baklava. The food was always wonderful.

My DGD is a talker, I have to tell to not repeat, even when I answer her she repeats four times like I did not, she ever stops. She just left, school begins tomorrow.
The bakalava, not my favorite, if I want sweetness, I go for the peee-can pie, but Greek friend used to make it for all of us, she was good and patient, all those layers. Am going to learn how to make pecan pie without white sugar, using stevia, maple syrup and pecan oil and raw butter, will be fun.
When I was off sugar for a few years went to Chinese restaurant w friend and ordered Sweet Sour Duck, I got 'drunk' on that thing, could not sit up straight, so much sugar in it, never will forget. Was the end of my abstinence from sugar too, forever.
Throwing on fire abstinence from sugar. and chocolate.
Throwing into the fire, controversy, omg omg omg the controversy augh why oh wy cannot everyone just live and let live in life?
Good to read all your stuff, will be back soon am sure.

Madbluebird--ohhh don't like baklava---pecan pie---in Canada they do a tart that is the same without the pecans,HMMMM what a great memory, Hi BTW the fire has two purposes ---throw things in that have made you angry--purpose get rid of the anger. Then there is the sweet fire that we join together and just love.

Sisters...we need to take the bonfire to a whole new level! I remember throwing in my uterine polyps months ago! But those suckers came right back along with my inflamed sinuses that I also threw in! Let's see... In the last few months between my ear infection and sinus issue, I had a D&C. Then I broke my foot. Then I had my ENT procedure last week and on Wednesday I am having another D & C. And in between, the DH had TWO life saving procedures....VR needs a break...and not one that involves her bones....
Beer pong anybody??!!!0 -
I think we need to get your guardian angel back on the job!
