Carole, Here is the recipe for Aloo Gobi from The Secret Keeper of Jaipur by Alka Joshi, the middle book of a trilogy set in northern India in the late '60s. It's probably not a good time for you to make it but you can save it for your autumn return south. My previous MO who is from India had a look at it as I was reading while waiting for him and said it looked similar to what his mother would make. There are no fresh coriander leaves in my neck of the woods so I used more powder.

2 russet potatoes peeled and cubed/ 1 small cauliflower florets separated/ 1 cup fresh or frozen green peas/ 1 yellow or white onion finely chopped/ 1/2 cup oil (canola, sunflower, safflower; I used a bit less)/ 2 tsp cumin seeds/ 2 Tbsp turmeric powder/ 2 tsp cumin powder/ 1 Tbsp garam masala/ 1 tsp ginger finely chopped/ 2 Tbsp coriander powder/ 2 tsp red chili powder/ 2-3 tsp salt /1/4 cup water/ 1 cup coriander leaves or more coriander powder

    1. Heat oil in deep skillet or large saucepan with heavy bottom. Add cumin seeds until they begin to sizzle.
    2. Add onions and saute on high heat until translucent.
    3. Turn down heat to medium. Add turmeric, cumin powder, garam masala, coriander powder, chili powder and salt and stir for 3 to 4 minutes.
    4. Add garlic and ginger. Stir. Add peas and stir.
    5. Add potatoes and cauliflower. Stir until all ingredients are well-coated with spices.
    6. Add water so as not to burn the vegetables. Don't add too much unless you want a soupy curry.
    7. Turn down the heat and cover. Cook for another 10-12 minutes taking care to leave a bit of crunch in the cauliflower.
    8. Garnish with coriander leaves or powder and serve.

Thanks, Maggie. That recipe looks simpler than the one I used. Cilantro is coriander, I believe.

My two friends and I ordered a dish from the appetizer list that we've had before. Crab cakes with slices of fried green tomatoes topped by a remoulade sauce. Green onion garnish on theirs. Delicious and plenty enough for lunch. One friend and I had Cosmo cocktails that were good but not as good as the Cosmo I order at the Boulders in MN. We will go there in June for dh's birthday dinner.

Tonight will be lamb chops and creamed spinach and a salad.

It turns out I didn't use up all the frozen meat because we've decided to leave on Saturday. I'll move the surplus to the outside freezer and have my sister pick it up for her use.

Also, I won't cook tomorrow night. We'll get some take out, probably a Subway sandwich since we can pick it up ahead of time.

My wings were just OK. Prosecco is nice when DH imbibes with me.

Carole…drool on the crab cakes. I will now be joining all the crab-lovers, bemoaning the cost, since DH can no longer harvest them…sigh. and DROOOOOL on the lamb chops. I love lamb…so much!!!!

Maggie, thanks for posting that recipe. I always keep canned potatoes in the pantry because we simply don't eat them fast/often enough. DH loves Indian food (as do I).

Sandy, A decent restaurant with reasonable prices and a parking lot is a great find in the city.

Wally, I’m glad you enjoyed your birthday Prosecco.

Carole, The sign you are ready to leave is that you have planned your last meal at home.

Dinner tonight was chicken and asparagus in cream sauce.

    Happy birthday, Wally!

Breakfast was a 1-egg omelet with Nova lox and freshly-snipped homegrown chives, plus a toasted "heel" of hi-fiber wholegrain bread. For dinner we took the kids and our HK (she's in town till Tues.) to Calo—the Italian restaurant in Andersonville where we've dined since 1979. I had grilled baby octopus over rapini & cannellini beans (and allowed myself part of a slice of tomato bread). When we got home, I had one of the Mother's Day chocolates (chipotle ganache). I'm letting myself have one every other night. 3 down, 2 to go. And I found out the pink chocolate stiletto heel shoe is actually dark chocolate. I may treat it like a chocolate Easter bunny, tiny bit by tiny bit. Will likely take at least a month (keeping it in the fridge).

@minustwo How are you? I hear Houston is a big mess.

Tonight will be leftover brisket I picked up on my way home from treatment yesterday.

YUMMMMMMMMMMM on brisket and grilled Octopus. I love Octopus and the canned version is a shadow of a good grilled option.

    Leftovers tonight.

So much for last night being the last meal cooked in our home kitchen for a while. It's supposed to storm tonight and tomorrow so we put off leaving until Sunday. I'm thawing a package of shrimp and a piece of tuna. Fortunately there's a bag of cooked linguine in the freezer. And I still have salad makings. If all goes well, tomorrow night will be the Subway sandwich and we'll get underway early on Sunday morning.

A lot of people are without power, thanks to last night's storms. Our only "damage" was a huge limb from a tree that landed a safe distance from the house. DH had to cut it into sections with his chain saw to move it.

I love brisket. Can't say the same for octopus since I have not eaten it. I have eaten squid and like the fried appetizer version with marinara. DH ordered squid in Portugal years ago and it came with a three prong fishhook.

Minus, how are things at your house? I know you have been hit with storms in the Houston area.

Illimae, Being able to get good brisket makes the trip for treatment worthwhile.

Carole, The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley.

Minus, I hope you are surviving the bad weather.

Dinner tonight was steak and non-local corn which again was very good.

We ended up with company for dinner last night. With the power out at their place, my sister and her dh accepted my invitation to make use of our guest bedroom. Her dh is a selective eater, basically meat and potatoes. I thawed the last pork steak and cooked it for him, also baked potatoes. My sister and dh and I had the shrimp and linguine and a romaine salad.

They're using a generator at their house to keep their freezers cold. The freezers are full of beef from animals they raised. I invited them to come again tonight but they're hoping their power gets restored.

Carole, I hope your sister gets her electricity back soon. We are on the same power line as the local hospital so we get priority restoration by proxy if we lose it.

Dinner tonight was a baked chicken dish with mayonnaise, artichoke and mushrooms.

Hope the weather issues get resolved, Carole. Safe travels to your summer destination.

I made tuna steaks with sweet potato and steamed broccoli.

Tonight will be mac and cheese and I may toss in some cauliflower, since it is languishing in my fridge.

Carole, I hope you are able to leave for your trip north and have a problem free journey.

Wally, I love cauliflower in mac and cheese.

Dinner tonight was creamy artichoke chicken pasta. It used up the rest of the artichokes and tasted different from last night’s meal.

We ended up rooting around. DH's hearing aid appointment took longer than we thought. So far, he likes them. We'll have a follow up in 3 weeks and hopefully, he'll know more questions to ask.

    I'll make the mac/cheese/cauli tonight.

No clue about dinner yet. By Wednesday, we are going to be near 90 here.

Wally, I'm glad your DH likes his hearing aids so far.

m0mmy, That weather forecast sounds like you need to plan for salads or grilling outside.

Dinner tonight was beef/sausage meatballs in Rao’s to use up the leftover half jar. Off to Boston tomorrow for three days of appointments. At least it’s only one round trip.

Dinner was seared flounder with lemon, roasted potatoes, and an Italian veg. blend. Tomorrow I pick up a pound of Copper River salmon.

Tonight was grilled burgers 🍔 and a homemade ranch dressing pasta salad that I made over the weekend. DH is a great griller so all was good.

Probably out for dinner tomorrow night. We are having guests this week ( Thursday) so I'll be cooking ahead of time so I can enjoy their company. Possibly a lasagna, salad from our garden, and perhaps a lemon bundt cake I found recently for desert. The menu in my head keeps changing.

Yeah. Don’t know how my face is going to feel tonight, got to have a filling done today. Had one done last week and my face hurt for a couple days.

Leftover mac/cauli/cheese tonight. LOVED it with that addition.

We have been in the 40s in the evening and 50s during the day. I actually have had to turn the heat on a few times. It is pouring out (we are always in drought in the summer, so this is most welcome). I'm counting down to October, but weather like this makes it bearable.

I either have allergies or a light summer cold….hope nothing more than that…enough crap going around.

DH is slowly adjusting to the new sounds of his hearing aid. I'm hopeful his loading the dishwasher means less broken glass/chipped plates, LOL.

And if any of you ladies has a trick for uncreasing a sleep-induced pillow face, please share. OY on my aging skin.

Tonight was a light dinner. Had to chew on the left side as my face and jaw are sore from the dental work.

  • maggie15
    maggie15 Member Posts: 1,438

m0mmy, I hope your mouth is feeling OK. Soup and yogurt are what I eat if I'm sore after dental appointments. Eating on one side is fine unless you have had work done on both sides.

Reader, Lasagna and lemon bundt cake sounds like the perfect menu. It's delicious, universally popular and can be prepared ahead so you can enjoy your evening.

Sandy, You seem have a great source for fish. They expect us to drive to the coast here but I'm on the side of the state furthest from the ocean. We do get fresh lobsters in one of the local grocery stores since they can't sell them in Maine where they are headquartered. Lobstermen get that local market.

Wally, I’m glad you’re getting comfortable weather. Can your pillow go in the dryer on low or air dry? That might work. I’ve never tried it with a pillow but you can get wrinkles out of clothes by hanging them in the bathroom when you shower.

I hope all who are traveling are experiencing smooth sailing and interesting meals along the way. Minus, I hope things aren’t too bad where you live.

Dinner tonight was a cheeseburger from the hospital cafe. DH got fries with his. Normally I’m not a fan but I tried one; hand cut from fresh potatoes and surprisingly one of the best I’ve ever tasted.

Maggie, LOL, I was talking about my face! I wish I could "fluff" in the dryer, LOL.

We have not heard anything about the copper river run and we are across the pond from ALaska…odd. I'll have to see when it is available here.

I think the mac/cauli/cheese will last another night for tomorrow.

Thinking good thoughts for all those in the path of the storms.

Wally, I wish all our facial imperfections were caused by wrinkled pillows. I guess we adopt the perspective that they show character and wisdom!

Brunch was a fried "heritage breed" egg (bright orange yolk) and a "faux-pizza:" Dave's Killer Bread toast topped with chopped cherry tomatoes, basil and melted provolone.

I did get the Copper River today (and it was pricier than a dry-aged prime ribeye). But it was great. Managed to pan-sear it on the gas grill before the wind kicked up. Brushed a little teriyaki marinade on top. Sides were sauteed sugar-snap peas, and nuked garlic green beans from Whole Foods. Bob didn't want a starch—en route to work, stuck in traffic, he ate 5 Little Schoolboy cookies and upon arrival, a donut brought by a drug rep. Lunch was (as always) at Palermo, where he had minestrone, a steak "strudel" (cross between a stromboli & calzone) and a big salad.

We're in the wee hours now and it looks like we dodged the worst of the storms—just very windy. Will have to water the tomatoes tomorrow, as we never got the predicted deluge, not even a drop.

Face is much better today and no jaw pain from the dental work yesterday. Now I owe my hubby a nice meal for his birthday on Friday as I am doing a big paper for my Lit class on the novel The Color Purple and I need page numbers for the quotes I have chosen from the book for talking about the various themes found in it that leads to loss of innocence and I don’t have the book! So hubby is going to try and get it for me.

As for dinner tonight, since it will be around 90 here, I am thinking either Sloppy Joes and Mac n Cheese or burgers and mac n cheese.
