Prof - that is exactly what a coworker and former police officer told me today.  They almost never go back to the same neighborhood and certainly not the next night.  I might have to break out the ambien tonight to shut my brain down though.  I have not taken it since pre-chemo.  I am not even sure if I still have it.

Sarah..those crepes sound incredible!  I'm going to have to take a shot at that!

Lisa...Holy Crap...that is just crazy..I feel pretty confident they won't be coming back to the neighborhood as I'm sure they will be patrolling it.  I hope you rest well and don't get too wigged out about the noises, but I'm like you I would be a little apprehensive about it..Thank goodness noone was physically hurt, but mentally I'm sure they are a wreck..I feel sorry for your neighbors..that's got to be awful.

Lisa.. I just read your story of the home invasion... We have a lot of Indians up here in my town.. and we have the same problem... One thing I heard is that usually they keep their gold in their safe deposit boxes, but they take it out for the Indian holidays. So we have seen more burgularies during the holiday season. There were a few house broken into in my neighborhood a couple of years ago... one person would ring the doorbell, while the other broke in the back, using cell phones to communicate. They did not like breaking into homes that had people though, thank goodness.. and if smeone answered the door, they were "selling magazines" or something. I had a strange man in my yard one day and he claimed to be a lawn specialist at the wrong address... and then asked me if my fence was for a dog... I said yes, my german shepherd... It didn't occur to me until he left that he was up to no good.. and I do have a shepherd, so she wards off most unwelcome guests... why come here when they can go to an animal-less house.

Betsy  - my thoughts on my security system are like yours and your dog.  Why break into the house that is monitored?  I read somewhere a long time ago that most criminals will avoid homes with security systems.  I have a sign in my front yard and little "this house is monitored" type stickers on all doors and windows that are on the ground level.

Just took an ambien so hopefully I will sleep through the nerves.  I just hope I don't pull a Burley and get up and eat in the middle of the night!  My diet has gone well this week.  I would hate to ruin it with eating that I won't even remember or enjoy.  LOL.

Lisa.. I don't think you will pull a Burley... I think that is a Burley thing... or put a lock on the fridge... LOL

I too have an alarm and actually use it... I have many friends who leave their houses unlocked, doors open, alarms off... and are dogless. If I were a burgler, I would shop at their house, not mine. I feel pretty safe, and so should you... Sleep well... and no eating.

Man, have none of your friends heard the horror stories of crimes in unsecure homes??  I watched one too many scary movies growing up and/or heard one to many scary stories about true crimes.  I would never leave a door unlocked on purpose.  Hell, I lock my bedroom door at night too (a habit I picked up after watching Jagged Edge in college).  I rarely sleep with the alarm system off.  About the only time it is off is if I have company that I worry may get up before me and walk out side with the alarm on.

I always set my alarm too.. and if I am in the backyard, I close my garage doors.. etc etc.. but my neighbors?? Thats another story. I have a couple where I just walk in.. and I joke with them about how unsecure it is... I think some are getting better as we hear more and more of house invasions. It is just such an invitation to leave a door open, or a window. An unlocked door is less obvious, but no less of a problem. I too grew up scared... and then went to college in New Orleans where there was a lot of crime... I lost many nights of sleep while I lived at one apt... and insisted on an alarm at my next apt.

My college town is not particularly scary itself, but we got a lot of lessons in home invasions when I was in college.  My college was one of the Ted bundy murder scenes, which was a lesson in leaving the back door locked.  I was quite young when the bundy murders occured, but ever since them, all the sorority houses have heavy securty and doors are never left unlocked.  In fact, they all have autolocks with keypads to reopen.  Then, in my sophmore year, the Gainseville murders happened.  Three hours away but basically put FSU's campus on lockdown for fear that the murderer would come over to tallahassee because gainesville was on high alert.  He, by the way, usually got in through an unlocked door or window.  We had a security expert come to teh sorority house and he told us all the ways a murderer could access the house if he wanted and what we could to do protect ourselves.  No freaking wonder I am complete chicken now.

Safe secure and medicated just about sums it up!  Man, I forgot how great ambien is.  I was out.  I don't think I even moved the whole night.  If it were not for the fact that it makes me dizzy after a few days, I would probably be addicted to this stuff.  GREAT night's sleep.

    Lisa,

I am glad you were able to sleep well. Add me to the chicken list... I subscribe to the big dog club (also have a Shepherd) and always expect something bad to happen whenever the power goes out. Clearly ahve seen one too many horror movies which may explain why I hate them now.

Hope everyone has a great Thursday. Only two more days til we can kick 2011 to the curb.

I hate those scary movies too... Just before going on a LONG camping trip out west many years ago, I watched this movie that was about a killer on a camping trip... I had done  a LOT of camping, and yet did not get much sleep.. It was not logical.. We were backpacking in Wyoming, in the middle of nowhere, and yet, I was thinking the killer would be there. We can't control where our mind goes when we are trying to sleep... unless we have Ambien of course.

     Hi all!

Glad you liked the sound of the pancakes/crepes, Lisa. You can also do the same with ham and mushroom fillings and an Italian ragu, meat sauce. All yummy, all massively calorific!  I saw that Gladys Knight place on Man vs Food - love the show and the presenter, Adam - he's so funny and kind of cute in a chubby way!  I like her song, something like, "I've really got to use my imagination", which includes the line "Keep on, keeping on" - good advice in adversity! Sorry to hear about your neighbours - hope they are OK. I think Indians keep lots of gold for dowrys and things. We have a lot of Indians in the UK, but I haven't heard of crimes involving them being robbed here. Plenty of other crimes here, though, but that's another story.

I know what you mean about the steroids, Heather. Miserable to be doing chemo. over Christmas. Hugs to you,

     All the best, Sarah x

Sarah - Are crepes (or pancakes) an english thing?  It seems like they would be.  Or maybe french.  There is a crepe restuarant here in atlanta that I love to go to.  They have about 30 differnt crepes, plus a "design your own" option with tons of choices for fillings.  My favorite is the cordonblue - chicken, ham, cheese in a crepe with a little bit of confectioner sugar and a rasperry sauce drizzled on the top.  It is outstanding!  The desserts are crepes too and they are sinful!  May have to plan a trip there soon.

So, after my amazing drug induced sleep last night, I have had the most productive day.  I have had so much energy.  Honestly, it is the best I have felt in a month or so.  I wonder if I am getting too little sleep?  I get in bed at a decent hour and do not get up too early, but I do tend to toss and turn a lot and get up and go to the bathroom a couple of times a night.  I guess that is more disruptive than I may realize.  None of that last night.  I felt like a new person today.  Hmmmmm.  I do not want to take ambien regularly because it makes me dizzy after a couple of days, but maybe once a week to get at least one good solid nights sleep a week?

Lisa, I am an Ambien girl and must tell you I love my Ambien!  I would give up my husband before my Ambien.  I don't sleep walk or raid the kitchen (that's burleys job).  Someone in the office today was talking about your neighborhood home invasion (must have been on CNN), I was thinking to myself, oh I know someone who lives in that neighborhood.

sarah, all this talk about crepes is making me hungry.  Do you make your own?  Sounds like you and Lisa are "foodies", do you all use that term in the UK?

Wow - I can't believe that was on the news outside of atlanta.  I wonder of the cultural aspect of it makes it more newsworthy.

So far, the ambien does not make me do anything crazy.  I just go into a comma like sleep.  The odd thing though is that it has no morning hangover for me like most sleep drugs do.  I normally would kind of drag in teh morning and snooze for a while.  Not on ambien. The second I wake up I am wide awake and ready to go.  It was the same way when I took it around the time of my diagnosis.

Lisa - so sorry about the home invasion, glad no one was hurt.  That is very scary hapenning so close to your house.  And I have never heard this about Indians and gold...But gold is sky-high now, I was at a shower and my dh's aunt's were all talking about how they sold a lot of their old jewlery to get some money...I was thinking I would do the same, but never got around to it.

Sarah - my dh and kids are addicted to Man vs. Food Nation!

Ambien didn't really work for me, I would sleep soundly for a while, but then start awake like someone turned a switch on.  I do take 1/2 unisom every night now though.

Kmur, sorry about your neice, that is so hard.

    Excuse me again...

So sorry for the multiple posts...

Anyway, we had a lovely 3 days of Christmas celebrating.  Christmas Eve was with DH's side of the family at his sisters house.  She always makes tons of food and "santa" comes (although my kids are a little old for it and I'm worried they will recognize him as its just my b-i-l), but my neices and nephews are younger. I overdid it a little as I was cleaning my house in the am and didn't nap well, so needed 2 Alleve when we got home.  Christmas am was just us and the kids had a lot of fun and church was nice.  My parents came for lunch and my mom and dh cooked while I napped.  My aunt joined us for dinner and it was a very low-key day.  The 26th we were at my sisters celebrating with my side of the family.  I did HBOT session in morning and my parents took my kids to my sisters.  Again, I missed all the cooking with my nap and no one would let me help clean up, so it was very relaxing for me Laughing

This is the first time is probably 12 years that we have not driven on Christmas and we usually then stay at my parents for 3-5 days.  I have to say that this was really much more relaxing and it was so nice not to rush home from church and try to pack and leave and tell the kids they have to leave most of the presents they just got and not play with them for 5 days!  The only downside is we usually also visit with my best friend, who still lives in the same town as my parents and I did miss not seeing her and her family.  Hopefully they can visit us soon.

In terms of gifts, I was so happy my brother had a baby this year (for obvious reasons), but also then we stop exchanging with the adults.  We both "cheated" a little, but it is nice not to buy for the adults.  So now 3 of the 4 siblings have kids and for adults we only buy for my sister and b-i-l (well, and my parents and dh's mom and aunt).

Re: the ornaments, my mom has been buying my grown cousins ornaments for years.  And she still does it every year, mails them and everything, even though most of them have their own families now.  They still all do seem to appreciate it though.  I had dessert with 4 of them recently and they were talking about how nice it is that my mom still does that.  I used to do it for my godchild, but then we stopped exchanging xmas gifts with them so I slacked off...

Hey - just a quick comment about ornaments.  I know I started this.  I hope no one thought I meant giving ornaments generally is a bad idea.  I was referring only to my Dad's tradition that involves a very particular line of ornaments (related to a football team) that I would never put on my tree because I prefer pretty ornaments in specific colors that match my overall decor.  After a couple of years of giving these but never seeing them on the tree, you would think my dad would stop, but no . . . I think we are on about 12 years of them at this point.  It was not about the ornaments so much as not getting the hint when I clearly do not like them.

    Ciao ladies!  Happy New Year!

Meegan - I'm glad we got to sit in the sun on Chistmas Eve because it's been raining for days now.  It's supposed to be summer and we are getting hit with the tail end of a cyclone.  We are going away on a beach holiday in 3 days so are hoping it clears up soon.  The girls are getting bored with sitting inside and are fighting, fighting, fighting!

Your Christmas Day sounds nice and relaxing ... and a Christmas niece is lovely.

Today is New Years Eve - it's going to be a wet one. We are off to our friends house in a couple of hours.

Lisa - I hope you are sleeping ok.

Got rush off and stop the girls fighting again ...
