Congratulations NYCchutzpah! This is a happy time for you and your family!
Thanks to everyone for responding to my questions about a MO in central Jersey.
I'll wait till the end of the year and then think about changing doctors. Right now, I am seeing the Neurologist, the pain specialist, the MO and also get all scans done in the same hospital. It is convenient this way. Since my mets are in my spine, I have to get MRI every six weeks.

Coming onto Long Beach Island (NJ), there is Bonnet Island Estate and Mallard Island Club. Both are banquet venues on the bay. I toured one of them when it first opened and it was beautiful.0 -
New to the site. recently diagnosed. Anyone in South NJ?0 -
me more like central as in Middlesex county, but also used Hackensack
welcome to the boards0 -
I'm in Mercer county .... more central than south, but at least still 609 area code, LOL.0 -
Thanks girls. Although I have supports, I do not have the support of anyone REALLY knowing and understanding what I am going through. Too bad you all are up North. Jersey is a big State. LOL0 -
Hi Gals,
Looking at three venues tomorrow. Rumson, Pt Pleasant and Asbury Park Going with daughter and the grooms mother. Looked at Liberty House in Liberty State Park and Entertainment Cruises last week. Liberty House is gorgeous but too pricey. The cruise also has a dock in Weehawken so we wouldn't have to shlep to Chelsea Piers. Daughter doesn't like my joking about using the American Legion in Edgewater (it dies have a view of the city)Daughter and I are getting totally confused. I keep on asking what does she want and she is not sure, neither am I. Found a nice vintage gold brocade YSL suit for the MOB but not sure about it. First need a date and a place before buying myself a dress or what ever.0 -
NYC......Crystal Point Yacht Club in Point Pleasant is a nice place plenty of parking and there is a View of the Water.........Liz0 -
Sandcastle, we did see Crystal Point yesterday, with the groom's Mom. Looked like an easy place to have a wedding. They were set up for a wedding and it looked good. We even looked at the motel rooms. Daughter is not sure if she wants to go so traditional. We also looked at a place in Asbury Park. The drive from the GSP to Asbury Park took us thru some of the seedier parts of the town, other mother was not impressed with that. We looked at Tim McCloones supper club located right on the boardwalk next to the convention center. This one is a little off beat. We could have the ceremony on the beach (DS would like a beach wedding) and the Berkley Hotel is a short walk from the venue with reasonable room rates. We did look at another venue but none of us liked that one. So far if we can swing it we might do boat the cruise in the NY harbor. Very tiring going to all these places and listening to their sales talk. I am so glad I only have one daughter0 -
EMQ2 _ I'm in Mercer as well, about an hour give or take ten, from Cherry Hill. Isn't there a support group at any of the nearby hospitals?0 -
Yes, there are a few. They meet one time per month at various places/days.0 -
NYC.......A boat cruise sounds very nice......one of my friends did that for her daughter and it turned out great........Liz0 -
emq2 - Where in S Jersey? I'm in Mercer Co but had my surgery/treatments at Jefferson in Philly, and they do have support groups and other programs.
Hello to all the new gals. We're probably due for a get-together at some point.0 -
Rachelvk - How did you like Jefferson? I had tx at FC in Philly. I like my PS and BS a lot. Like my MO too, but not crazy about the revolving door of fellows. I finished chemo in 2/12 and Herceptin in 11/12. I'm now to the point where I see MO every 4 months. If I make it to 5 years, I will see her NP every year. I'm trying not to think too far ahead, but I don't like the possibility that I won't see an oncologist on a regular basis past 5 years. I also don't like that I will now see BS yearly, and if I'm ok by this year's check up in September, I get put into "survivor clinic" and won't see him anymore. Do you know how long MO at Jefferson will see you? I'm thinking that if I make it to the 5 year mark and FC pushes me into this clinic where I won't even see a doctor anymore, I will look for an oncologist who is willing to see me once a year, but I would want to be sure whoever I switched to is highly recommended and is the type who sees patients him/herself and doesn't push them off onto a fellow or NP after a certain amount of time has passed since dx.
ETA - btw, I'm in Mercer County too and can easily travel to Philly or anywhere in Jersey, although I prefer not to travel to NYC.0 -
shore, My onco is at Hackensack, I am 5 years out and see her every 6 months. Have not been pushed off to a NP by her but have been by my BS who I see only once a year

Proudtospin - thanks, who is your MO and do you like her?0 -
Donna Macnamara and I like her a lot!

Shore1 - Sorry - I don't check in all that often anymore. I've liked Jefferson. I'm on the 4-month plan currently. I think she wanted to put me at 6 months but realized I wasn't ready yet. We haven't spoken about the long-term plan. I have my next appointment in February and will ask and let you know. I agree - I can't imagine the idea of not having an MO keep an eye on me. But I have to admit, my other local doctors are all up on the situation and good about taking an extra look at everything.
I actually have a friend who after going through uterine cancer and melanoma, after just under 4 years told her doctor she doesn't want to come back any more. She's tired of the scans and the fear and would rather just go about living her life, and that if something comes back, she'll pick up on it. I don't think I could ever do that, but part of me admires her approach. I do hate the fear and worry and anxiety.

Hi Rachel - as someone who's been through it two times, I feel pretty confident that you'll feel more confident about your health as time goes by. You won't feel the same at 10 years post treatment as you do now, two years later. Sending you (and everyone) hugs and a happy and healthy New a Year.

Rachel - Thanks, I would be interested to hear what your MO tells you about the long term plan. Jefferson, UPenn, Fox Chase, etc. might all have some version of the "survivor clinic" that I know FC has. I don't like the sound of it now, but hope that JoanQuilts is right and I feel more confident as time goes by. As of now, almost 2 years from end of chemo, I still worry a lot.

Hi all I'm new here. I live at the snowy jersey shore about 5 minutes to LBI... Had a left mx on dec 20th and did it at the local hospital affiliated with Meridian. All my drs are local. I have 3 daughters that keep me hopping so traveling for appointments did not appeal to me. Hope everyone is safe in the snow!

Hello NJmom3.....I am at the Jersey Shore too.......had my surgery local at Ocean Medical Center in Brick.....did travel at first up North to St. Barnabas....But that Doctor sure did not work out for me.......Best of Luck....Liz

I so understand doing things local if possible. I worked in Hackensack during treatment and used the Hackie hospital for rads and still use an onco there. Last week I needed sinus surgery (does it never end?) so used a local ENT who did surgery at Raritan Bay~~~goodness but I do have good things to say about the experience! Since I have some LE you better believe I was worried but I told them "no needles left arm" and they gave me a pink warning band when I checked in! It also is reassuring to know if emergency were to occur, easy for me to get to
now, off to coffee

Just found out about the discussion board and so glad I did. I was diagnosed with stage 2 BC in August. Have completed 12 weeks of chemo and just started my 2nd 12 weeks. I am now getting a more intense treatment and it has brought me to my knees (literally in the bathroom). I haven't been able to eat and have like a film on my teeth and tongue. No amount of brushing makes it any better. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone - I didn't see this board till now. I'm in Essex county, but grew up in Monmouth, so I'm fluent in both northern and southern NJ speak. Did treatment at MSKCC. Glad this board exists and would love to know if their are any 5ks locally that I can do for BC this spring. It would be my first 5k in a looonng time but you have to start somewhere....

Nenny02, sorry you are having a rough time with chemo. What type of chemo are you getting and where? I live in central jersey and had my treatments at Overlook hospital in Summit. I was given a lot of anti-nausea medicines (Emend works very well) and was asked to drink a LOT of water (or any liquid). This definitely helps. I ate baked potato with a little salt or plain rice.
This will be over soon and you'll start feeling better. Till then, we are here to hold your hand!
Take care,
Desi.

Desi......YOU are right....Emend works very well.....has to use it a few times before surgery....because of the fact I would get sick after......When I lived up North, Overlook was the hospital I always used.......but I am down the Shore now......Liz

Can any of you ladies recommend a place for PT? My PS gave me a prescription, just not sure of where to go....
0 -
are you looking for PT for LE? or to get back into shape and keep the achies at bay?
I am a member at a gym in Old Bridge and dang if I did not find a trainer there who was working on phd in athletic training with an emphasize on cancer survivors! Tim is great and has gotten me on track and not getting into LE touble.
for LE, I used a therapist up at Hackensack
I do understand that the hospital in Freehold has a good PT area (I keep forgetting the name!)
actually, I can give you Tim's e mail as he is working with the Fitness and Wellness centers in NB

I'm looking for PT but someone in Essex county. I hear what you say though - I really want someone who has cancer patient experience.
