Greetings to all. I am three months out from chemotherapy as of today, and nearly a month out from radiation, so I think it's about time that I join you in documenting my efforts to get back to my "normal" self. I have tried to get as much exercise as I could throughout my treatments, and that includes continuing to work with the personal trainer who has been trying to get me in shape for several years. But I have lost a lot of ground, primarily due to chemotherapy, which left me with neuropathy in both hands and feet. Fortunately, I have not had neuropathic pain, but I do have partial numbness, tingliness, and weakness. I can do what I need to do to get through the day, but I do it slowly and awkwardly, and I'm apt to lose my balance if I make any sudden moves. When I walk, I tend to wobble a little, like a toddler who hasn't quite got walking figured out yet. That's cute in a one-year-old, but I suspect that it makes me look like I might be a little bit drunk. So there is a LOT of room for improvement here.

Today's activity started with a one-hour personal training session, during which I worked primarily on balance and coordination. I don't actually have very much of either of those things, but I am better than I was during the last few weeks of chemo and the first few post-chemo weeks. During that dark period I could barely walk with a cane and probably could not have balanced on a bosu if my life had depended on it. Now, I can balance for short periods. Very short periods actually, but you have to start somewhere. After that, I went to the stable where my horse, Rosie, lives, and I got some good arm exercise brushing half an acre or so of dried mud off her. This is a regular activity, because she likes to roll in the mud. And the mud really shows on her because, although she is a paint by breeding, her coloring is pure palomino. Next time I get a horse, I'm getting a mud-colored one.

Welcome, Rocky! Sounds like you are doing all the right things. I once read that however long you were it active treatment, that it would take you that long to get back to 'normal'. I would say doubling the amount of time is more like it. It will take longer than you want, but it will come!

Hi Rockymountaingirl, Glad you are on the other side. Be good to Rosie as she holds the key to your recovery. Bet she is taking extra rolls in the mud to make sure that you brush her enough.

    Happy Thanksgiving! - Claire

Rocky Mountain girl- haven't heard from you in awhile so nice to hear that you're getting back on track. Chemo and radiation affects us all differently. One thing's for sure it isn't any fun. Very sorry to hear about the issues you're having with neuropathy but it seems that you are improving. Hopefully your neuropathy will be reversible. Do keep up the good work. Have a fantastic Thanksgiving.

Subbed again today. The 8th graders this year are very 'high maintenance', they aren't bad kids but totally squirrely! I'm tired!!

I went to Dance2Fit tonight and, since I didn't do them last night, I will do some abs as soon as I log off. Enjoy tomorrow. Eat, drink and make merry tomorrow, and then right back on the exercise wagon. Hug

Totally on this one! I did do 5 miles total of running/walking today plus a lot of "mental workout". Dinner is in the oven.

My friend who lives in London has chocolates every evening and is slim. She also has two huge dogs whom she walks daily. Does this tell us anything? She is also the one who convinced me to buy a bread machine which I have been using. I don't think this is genetics. Just getting out there.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Thank you for the article Falconer. I know I am headed out for a couple of hours on my bicycle prior to settling in to cook today.

None of the findings in the article surprise me. Some of the work that strongly influenced my desire to exercise was published 20 years ago in Prevention just prior to publication of this book: Miriam E. Nelson, Ph.D., Strong Women Stay Young. She was able to demonstrate that exercise can "reverse the clock" on people of almost any age from midlife on.

Now that I am at a point in my life where I intend to carve out more time for travel, I want that to be cycling, and not on the tour bus. Places I want to visit also have stairs....lots of them. So exercise is as much about having options when we get older as anything else.

I am beyond thankful for all the wonderous things in my life, and especially that I am still here to enjoy them. Equally thankful for my friends and all the great times together. As I prepare today's feast, I shall also reflect on how lucky I am to have enough to eat, and to have wonderful, fresh food available all year round. Most of us are spoilt for choice in this respect.

As long as it doesn't contain marshmallows..... Happy Thanksgiving!!! - Claire

Delicious Thanksgiving dinner last night. I brined the turkey and it was soooo yummy and moist. Stuffing was not as good as usual, I think I put too much water in it....it was too "wet" . ...continued to cook it after we were done dinner....but still think its not right. Going to make another small batch for DS and me tonight. Thanksgiving dinner #2. Made a care package for DH to share with his mother - turkey, yams, green beans and yams. I made cookies for my MIL, but not sending pie - too hard to pack when all you are taking is a backpack and carry-on.

Wishing everyone who celebrates and happy Thanksgiving - enjoy good friends, family and good food!

Jo, pretty easy as I recall, but that was a while back when I got the first one. This second one was just a matter of adding a device into the app.

Wow, Varga. I'm way behind you as always!

Today is Black Friday here as well so I should try to take advantage.

Yesterday morning was spent at the animal hospital. Our dog, Allie, was hit by a car, stabilized in emergency care, operated on to check for internal injuries and put to sleep. We are very grateful to have known and loved her.

Heidi, so sorry about your furbaby....hugs to you

So tired of all the Black Friday ads and commercials.....and why do they still call it Black Friday for the sales on Thanksgiving!!! I will not frequent any store on Thanksgiving....can't people plan in advance? Today is Black Friday and I'm staying as far away from the stores except for the grocery store......If I need anything, I'll buy online. To me the Black Friday sales are to buy things that you would not buy if it wasn't on sale for 70% off!!!

I do need a new cell phone - my iPhone is over 3 years ago, battery doesn't last very long and touch pad doesn't always work - keep holding off - Apple has a sale for $50 store gift card....not sure if I'll take advantage, cuz I don't shop Apple other than for my phone. I guess I'll ask my DD#2 if there is anything she needs and use the gift card for her.

Time to get busy - I've dusted most of what I wanted to.....still need to do a shelve in the family room and book shelf in the living room. With my Miscah (almost 10 year old St. Bernard), the house always needs sweeping or vacuuming so need to do that and the regular Friday cleaning. Shabbat dinner is just me and my son, so not going to go overboard.....making chicken wings and maybe potato knishes, but I need to figure out other sides.....

    Have a great day

Heidi, I am so sorry about your dear dog. Pets are truly beloved members of the family.

We ended up having a very nice time yesterday, and I was in food heaven, yum!

This morning my fitness center had "Fit Friday" offering a bunch of extra classes all morning. I went to Dance2fit, Aqua Zumba, and Barre; so worked off one of the pieces of pie anyway!

Heidi- so sorry to hear about your dog! (((((Hugs)))))

Jo- the fitbit is super easystem to setup. My phone is older (DH refuses to get new ones until this Samsung 5 quit) so I had to delete a few apps that I did really use anyway to download and update the app. I have the new Charge 3 it's water proof. I had an Alta and loved it! It lasted a little over 2 years.

Cold and grey in the mountains today. I'm sure it's not as cold were some of you are!

varga and heidu- thanks for the update on the Fitbit watch. Hottie I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Ally. Good pet owners know that our furbabies are part of our family.

Ruth- I'm so glad you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving with your family.

Weather was chilly this morning, but the sun came out so it is gorgeous low 50s. Same for tomorrow.

The turkey last night was wonderful again. We still have plenty left and that is after 7 servings.

Cooking BBQ/grilled chicken wings with potato knishes for Shabbat dinner for my son and me plus a hot veggie. NO baking since I still have pies and lots of cookies.

Sometimes FB ads are good - saw a pair of frames that I love so clicked the link. I'm picked up my Rx and going to order them . Just need my son to help me measure my pupillary distances, not something I can do by myself. The rest of the order form is done. Easy to copy the Rx when it is fill in the blank!!! The place has a 30 day money back guarantee. And the glasses should be about 1/2 that I pair by me. We've been getting our glasses at the same place for over 25 years. The owner and my husband became friends and he always gave us a discount. The owner has been out for sometime ill, so he is not in the store anymore. So I don't feel too bad ordering elsewhere.

Need to go cook the wings and vacuum. Mischa is getting groomed on Sunday.

Have a great Saturday. I should be back tomorrow night. Karen

Hope all you wonderful ladies had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

So very sorry Heidi. Sending you hugs!

Vargadol...awesome job on all those steps!

We had a nice Thanksgiving and enjoying a relaxing day today. Almost 2 weeks ago I started my annual Stride Thru The Holidays running challenge. It is thru Another Mother Runner and I participate every year. Its a great way to keep me motivated and moving this time of year. I have worked out and/or ran every day this week so far. Today I got out for nice 3 mile run and 30 min of strength work after. Enjoying a quiet evening on the couch with a new book and a Christmas movie tonight and will finish Christmas decorating tomorrow along with a spin class and another run.

    Enjoy your weekend ladies!

NTSU Fitness CalculatorFalconer that is an encouraging and motivating article. Periodically I like to do this fitness calculator. It makes me feel good about execising and taking care of myself.

Heidi I am so sorry to hear about you dog. I know that is a sad time. Hugs.

I am getting better but have not tried to resume any exercise. I am still falling asleep by 8 so I think I am not quite ready yet.

We are having our turkey today. It is in the oven now. We skipped it on Thursday and had good old fashioned southern breakfast instead, including my grandma’s biscuit recipe with honey butter- mostly because no one had shopped and I didnt feel like going to relatives. But watching the New Orleans game, they featured Emerill’s Thanksgiving creations that made our mouth water and so DH got a turkey yesterday and we are doing our meal today.

Heidihill, I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your dog. I have had many pets over the years, each special in his or her own way, and I know how very sad it is to lose a pet.

I did not exercise on Thanksgiving, unless you count eating as exercise, but I have no intention of wasting the entire holiday weekend. I have a small collection of exercise equipment at home, and most of my exercise for the last few days has involved using that. The only "big" piece is an exercise bike; the rest is small stuff, like mats, an exercise ball, a bosu, some stretch bands, some weights, and that sort of thing. My exercise at home is supervised by Benjamin, my fat lazy cat, who looks on with horror as I lift weights, bend and twist and balance (or try to) on the bosu, and try to carry out squats and planks and things in a way that my trainer would approve of. Benjamin's idea of exercise is hopping off the bed to waddle over to his food dish. He does not understand why anyone would voluntarily engage in activity that requires physical effort.

I have also been out to the barn every day to scrape mud off Rosie as necessary, and to work with her on her ground manners. She is pretty good at being led, but the fact that I am walking slowly these days sometimes makes it hard for her to stay with me as she should. Or she just wants to go faster. In which case she is being very rude, since the rule is that, having a larger brain and opposable thumbs, I get to be the herd leader. That makes her number two in our herd, and number two is supposed to follow. If she doesn't, the boss mare -- that would be me -- will take corrective action. Anyway, if she gets ahead of me, we stop, and if she doesn't immediately back up, I remind her to do so. Some days she does a lot of backing up. We are also working on "stand," which means what it sounds like. She doesn't get that very well. I put her where I want her, tell her to stand, and she doesn't, so I put her back and tell her again to stand. If she manages to stand still for thirty seconds, I heap praise on her. She doesn't do it that often.

A couple of times a week I go to one of the rec centers here and walk the track for half an hour or so. It is easier to walk there than on the sidewalks because I have trouble sometimes with curbs -- stepping down or up can throw me off balance. I was walking the track yesterday, and was reminded again of how far I have to go to regain my strength and stamina. Half an hour of steady walking is enough to wear me out. And at that, I am the slowest person on the track!

I think I will go get my step thing and practice stepping up and back down again. That will challenge my balance, among other things, and hasten the day when I can go for a walk through the neighborhood like any normal, non-balance-challenged person. Baby steps.

All sorts of weather in Denver today.....cool/cold this morning...by noon it was sunny, blue skies, sunny and around 60, pouring rain this afternoon, then really windy tonight and now snow!!!
