    Hi all

Mum's funeral was a sad day for all of us but was lovely. Dad was surprised by how many people came and invited a few people back to my sister's after when it was supposed to be just family. He ended up having a good time with them which was good.

I've been to ED again with more severe pain and my Urologist has said that I need a new kidney stent so another surgery. I had chemo last week for the first time in a month. Now I have the flu and haven't had the flu shot yet. It got me early this year.

Do you have the show Masterchef over there? It was supposed to start tonight but one of the Chef judges died yesterday, probably suicide. They have delayed the series until next week. Everyone is very shocked.

I haven't been eating much again, had soup for lunch and scrambled eggs for tea. I did go out for Chinese last week which I enjoyed, fried rice and sweet and sour fish.

Aussie, hope the new stent helps. Also hope good memories of your mother soothe some of the grief.

DH's lamb stew last night was outstanding. I thought it was better than beef stew but he wouldn't agree to that comparison. Good and different taste but not better. Maybe it was luck but all the components, chunks of lean lamb and veggies were perfectly cooked.

Nance, bad news about your back pain.

Eric, a great situation for MIL's cat, finding a good home.

I'm wondering about Sandy's absence, too.

Once I discovered the Bookmarks, I'm ok with the change.

No clue yet about dinner but lunch will probably be leftover pizza.

This is the source of my frustration - I can’t seem to get to the bookmarks easily. I have to go through several pages nagging me for info I’ve already given until I find them. What am I missing?

Last night was a carry out meal of sirloin steak, baked potato and salad it was delicious. Tonight is an unknown. My back won’t let me stand too long so food prep is a challenge

Bookmarks are also at the bottom of the pages. There is way too much scrolling, IMO, and I'm constantly getting logged out, even though I keep the site up, which is MORE scrolling! No "angry" emoji to use, have to get one off the internet.

After signing in and clicking on my avatar this is what I get:

I then have to navigate through a couple of pages and nag screens to find bookmarks.

Nance, I had to change my browser settings to allow pop-up window for BCO. I'm wondering if that is messing things up for you.

I think I figured it out.

Once you log in, go to "community" at the top of the page and then click on "all topics". From there, clicking on the avatar gets to the bookmarks.

    …at least it does for me…. :-)

Interesting Eric. That's what I've had to do the last several months. Had to go to community & all topics to get to favorites. Now I just log in and find a list going down on the right to 'bookmarks'.

When I go to "breastcancer.org" and log in, I get what Nance sees and then I can choose the "community" button to get to the forums . When I go directly to "community. breast cancer.org", I get what you see, Minus.

This makes sense…start from the beginning and choose to go to the forums, or just start directly at the forums. The site was new to me back in 2012 and it's new again…I'll figure out all the new ways to get where I need to go.

Today was an errand day, some for MIL and some for us, We left at 3:30pm and got home at 6;30pm. Dinner tonight is mac & cheese and asparagus done in the air fryer.

The dog was laying down in the hallway and the cat came running around the corner into the hallway, jumped over the dog's back and kept on going. It reminds me of that old phrase, "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back", except it's a brown-white-tan colored cat and the dog isn't lazy. :-)

Everybody (2 vets and the shelter where MIL adopted him) agree he is a Snowshoe cat and is quite "the looker". Like I've said before, I'm going to miss him when he's back with DD in Detroit.

MIL's cat sounds very pretty. We always preferred cats to dogs and had brothers, Pat and Mike, until they both reached old age and died within months of each other with different illnesses. They were outside cats with a cat condo on the carport. During the cold weather they had their own electric blanket in their bed. I grew up on a small farm and we did not have animals in the house. That attitude stuck with me.

Last night's menu including shrimp did not work out. When I stopped by Pat's Seafood to buy the shrimp, it was closed and I decided not to pursue the menu by shopping elsewhere for fresh shrimp. Instead we had leftover chicken thighs cooked in a curry sauce, yellow squash and a big tossed salad.

I had to google snowshoe cat; adorable! We have a feral that looks just like that (at least I think he is feral). I'm anti-dog at the moment since neighbors dogs kept me up at 11:30pm 2 nights ago. how can people be so clueless and inconsiderate, especially since I've already talked to them about this once. Ugh.

Last night was the Dungeness crab; steam-broiled asparagus and odd and end chips (potato and corn). I think potato chips are heroin for me so I only had a tiny bag and split it with DH.

Tonight, I need to use up some bok choy so will figure something out with that and tofu and maybe soba noodles.

I am also still getting kicked off the site and I hate having to sign in every hour. I'm not thrilled with the navigation here but have managed to "deal" with it.

I don't stay signed in any more, either. But it's easy to log in since the computer remembers the password. All in all, I've made the transition fairly easily. I don't use my IPhone for bc.org. Always the laptop.

A few times during our rv'ing days we were annoyed by barking dogs left in campers or motor homes while the owners were out and about. Our neighbors here are too far away for us to hear a dog when we're inside the house. The flip side of that situation is that no one could hear us yelling Help! at the top of our lungs.

We had the leftover lamb stew last night and enjoyed it again with a large tossed salad.

Wally, I'm sure you will master the routine of making the trip to Seattle for dh's treatment. My flaw is that I always try to visualize and imagine what an experience will be like instead of letting it happen and dealing with the challenges in present time. Any possibility of staying in a hotel as Goldie does when she goes for treatment? I'm hoping the benefits make the stress worthwhile.

Carole, appreciate your kind words and perspective.

I'm thawing the Costco polish sausages and will dice them up and use them as "meatballs" in a pasta/tomato dish; I'll also add some broccoli to the mix.

    Grrrr….

It took three times to get MIL's inconsistent medication orders corrected…things like orders a few seconds apart that countermand each other (stop and continue a med), likely duplicate orders or "same med on same schedule, but with different doses".

Each time I pointed out the inconsistencies, the office staff agreed and sent the orders back to be corrected by the doctor.

When I stopped by to get the latest list, I was told that further requests for corrections would require an appointment with the doctor, and the tone of voice was one of annoyance on their part.

I'm not sure how all of this is my fault. The nursing home needs "good orders" and the doctor is supposed to provide them.

    <rant off>

Sharon is fixing a vegan tuna (like) salad dish tonight.

Eric, regarding signing in that is what I’ve been doing - going to community >active topics >etc. But before I can get there I have to get past nag screens to update my signature (which I have done), update my profile (also done) and accept cookies ( every single time.) Beyond annoying.

We had a large Italian lunch out today so dinner was grilled cheese and (homemade) tomato soup. DH was pleased with the soup but I thought it tasted too much like tomato sauce possibly the result of using canned Italian tomatoes. Much better with fresh IMO. Probably should have added milk or cream.

Since we are leaving on a trip tomorrow tonight was dinner out at a favorite local Italian place. Due to my efforts to lose weight and healthify my diet I had grilled balsamic chicken, cappelini with just a smidgen of oil, butter sauce, and broccoli 🥦. Oh and pinot noir. We turned away the fabulous bread. All wonderful.

Eric I just have to say that I would be tempted to let the Dr. Know of this situation. Is it really possible the DOCTOR electronically entered all of that wrong? What a liability. And if they didn't who did?And the comment to you! I'd be ranting also.

Carole do you have a good recipe for the lamb stew? I'd love it if you do.

Eric, what an irritating situation with MIL's meds. She's lucky to have someone helping her.

The morning news is covering a story about fish fillets made with 3-d printers!

Dinner last night was baby back ribs finished on the grill with barbecue sauce and a side of coleslaw made with cabbage sliced very thin as in slivered.

Nance, I hope the site stops messing with you. Home-made tomato soup sounds delicious and I love grilled cheese sandwiches. Your mention of an Italian lunch was tantalizing considering where you live, in proximity to some great Italian restaurants.

I bought what I hope is a good marsala wine to use in cooking. Also a dry sherry. I learned the hard way not to use the marsala sold in supermarkets. I forgot to check for mirin.

    eric95us Member Posts: 3,178

The strange things on the site have been "going and coming". The biggest help was deleting all the cookies in the browser and letting things start over from scratch. Even then, I still get some weird thing happen .

I found similar problems with MIL's hospital discharge instructions back when she had the C-diff. And, that was a different hospital/medical provider. So, I guess it's nothing new, nor will ever be completely fixed.

We're not sure about dinner tonight, but since it's only 8'30am, we have some time to figure it out.

  • carolehalston
    carolehalston Member Posts: 8,315

I opened the bottle of Marsala wine last night and added 2/3 cup to the sauce of chicken marsala, along with cream and chicken broth. The sauce was very good. Sides were pasta out of the freezer and a tossed salad with our favorite additions including avocado and blue cheese.

We're going to the home of friends tonight for a Pontchartrain Poboys takeout dinner. Linda is the friend who had done most of the planning for our trip to Ireland and Scotland with Trafalgar in September. I will be using a credit card to pay for our half of the advance cost. I called the credit card bank yesterday to alert them.

I think it was 2013 when we did a big Alaska trip and travelled through the Yukon with a truck camper mounted on dh's 1 ton pickup truck. We talked to motorcycle travellers on some of the ferries. Our trip lasted four months. Some of the Yukon campgrounds had only generator power. Not a power line in sight.

Have been having the leftover pasta stuff; today is the last day.

Tomorrow will be sockeye, fried potatoes (I'm boiling up the german creamers—I think that is the varietal—now so I can panfry them tomorrow) and some green veg TBD.

Well - I haven't dropped out, but I don't find the new format spectacular. So far I'm only reading this thread.

I've been chasing my tail trying to get Civic Club stuff done for our Spring Fling (the lady who volunteered has done NO thing) and get the community pool in shape (the neighbor who always helped died in February). Can I just say I hate April & May? For the neighborhood gathering for 100 people - her decision was just announce a date and whoever could show up with whatever. Well no - we at least have to have lifeguards. Oh well, and maybe the hot dogs will magically appear? And someone will magically cook them??

As for the pool, we madly trying to find a new company to service it again this year since the current one can't even keep the chemical in balance. URGH. The latest thing I discovered - I have to take the fire extinguisher to be re-certified. Which reminded me that I haven't heard from the insurance agent & the policy expires this month. Which reminded me - the CPA never confirmed that he's finishing up the taxes for the 5/15 deadline.

3 meetings yesterday & planting the flower beds at the Community Pool. 5 meetings today and posting all the updated required notices. AND this is all outside & it was 93 today in the shade!!!

The only good thing is I truly haven't even had time to eat so I've lost 5 of the pounds that had crept up on me. Honestly too tired to even bother by the end of the day. Today's only meal was raspberries in heavy cream and a handful of mixed nuts. Yesterday's only meal was some black olives, a scoop of cottage cheese and 1/2 an avocado. This too shall pass…..

Minus, do take care of yourself. It sounds like a mixed blessing to keep so busy but you must remind yourself that it isn't all your responsibility. 93….OY. I'm feeling faint just reading that number. You're a force to be reckoned with, for sure!

minustwo, I hope the community recognizes and appreciates your contributions! Yes, do take time to take care of yourself. Easier said than done when it’s such a busy time of year, but you are worth it!

Dh retired last month. He’d worked decades in the steel mill and then the power plant from which he took an early retirement package in 2019. The past four years he worked as a maintenance tech at an apt building two minutes from home. The residents and staff gave him the very nicest send-off all month long, showering him with small gifts, cards and many nice sentiments of what a great job he did and how much he’ll be missed. He found a terrific fellow to fill his position; we live in a small town and are acquainted on a personal basis with many who live in the apt building, so the right replacement was important to us.

All this is to say that on his last day of work, I surprised dh by making balsamic chicken, one of his favorites, made in the slow cooker. Served over pasta and with garlic bread. The office manager gave him a delicious fruit covered cake so that was dessert, altho I’d also made a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies. The next day we met ds in Pittsburgh and went out for steak and shrimp dinner. I’m not that big into steak but it seemed an appropriate way to celebrate. Our waiter was great which made the dinner even nicer. I got dh a tshirt that said, “Retired 2023–I worked my whole life for this t-shirt”. His kind of humor. He loved it. Truth be told, tho, he bought a beautiful new fishing boat this year and thank goodness. It will get him out of the house! Him here all day is a big adjustment for me!

Someone, Cardplayer, maybe, asked for the lamb stew recipe. DH made the stew the same way he makes beef stew. He floured the lamb, which was very lean, and browned the pieces in a little olive oil. He added about a cup of beef broth, made with Herb Ox granules, and deglazed the Dutch oven. Then he cooked the meat in a 350 degrees oven for about an hour. Added potatoes, carrots and onion, the latter pierced with toothpicks to keep the chunks together. Cooked in the oven another hour.

Tonight's dinner will be the last ribeye steak in the freezer.

Minus, we haven't gotten into the 90's yet. But the humidity is back. I stepped outside yesterday and said, "Yep. This is Louisiana." The weather has been so nice lately that I was starting to wonder if we really had to go north.

Illimae, best to you with your scans. You sound so calm. If you could bottle that, you could sell it!

I'm making scrambled eggs to go with the leftover fried potatoes and green beans from last night.

Carole, found some leg of lamb pieces frozen while looking for squid I wanted to make a curry with. That stew sounds delicious.

  • carolehalston
    carolehalston Member Posts: 8,315

Wally, you're the only person I know who cooks squid! I've eaten it only in restaurants fried crispy and served as an appetizer with a tomato sauce. Many years ago when we went to Portugal, dh ordered it and it was small whole squid, not fried, kind of rubbery. The dish had a fish hook in it! We still laugh about that experience.

I took out a couple of pork chops with the idea of a pork chop and Spanish rice dish. I love Spanish rice.
